Cones (Retina)

Synonym(s) - Cone Photoreceptor - Photoreceptor, Cone

Definition: One of the two types of photoreceptor cells in the vertebrate retina. In cones, the photopigment is found in the invaginations of the cell membrane of the outer segment. The cones are less sensitive to light than the rods, but offer vision with higher spatial and temporal acuity, and the combination of signals from the cones with different pigments allows colour vision.
