Fovea centralis

Fovea centralis

Definition: Area about 1.5 millimetres in diameter within the macula lutea where the retina thins considerably due to the oblique displacement of all the layers except the pigment epithelium layer. It includes the sloping walls of the fovea (clivus) and contains a few rods at its periphery. In its centre (foveola) are the cones best suited to giving high visual acuity, each cone being connected to a single ganglion cell. (Cline et al., Dictionary of Visual Sciences, 4th ed.)
